2010 August 19 Theron introduces “Bills on Tape”

Peter Theron, Republican candidate for Wisconsin's 2nd Congressional District, introduces "Bills on Tape", a service for busy legislators who do not have time to read bills before they vote to approve them.

Theron explains, “This effort will distribute the burden of reading across the entire population. It will truly be Citizens Reading Incumbents' Bills that Not One of Them Even Skimmed (C.R.I.B. N.O.T.E.S).” Theron is taping citizens reading sections of the health-care bill and posting these videos on his website, TheronForCongress.com.

Theron continues, “Before Tammy Baldwin and Russ Feingold voted for Obamacare, they had not read its 2,074 pages. This carelessness was not an isolated incident. Earlier this month, Tammy Baldwin and Russ Feingold voted for a bill that lacked a proper title.”

The official title of H.R. 1586 is the “______ Act of ____”. It is also known as “The XXXXXX Act of XXXX.” Not only did this bill not have a proper title, it was an appropriations bill that unconstitutionally originated in the Senate. Despite these problems both Tammy Baldwin and Russ Feingold approved of the bill.

Theron also notes that before administration officials criticized SB1070, Arizona's immigration law, they had not read its 17 pages. “We need representatives in Washington who will treat legislation with the care it deserves,” Theron adds.

Theron concludes, “People wishing to participate in CRIB NOTES can contact me at Peter@TheronForCongress.com.”

2010 August 16 Theron will help stop the train!

Peter Theron, Republican candidate for the 2nd Congressional District, is prepared to back the campaign pledges of Scott Walker and Mark Neumann to stop the $810 million Madison-Milwaukee train. Theron’s legislative proposal will save Wisconsin taxpayers from having to pay more for this poorly conceived project.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray La Hood has committed federal dollars that he says Wisconsin would have to return if the train is not built. Theron’s proposal would change federal law to drop the continuing-effort condition on federal transportation funding. Canceling the train project would then require no payback of spent funds. Unspent funds would go towards paying down the federal debt.

“Wisconsin taxpayers should not have to pay for the mistakes of Governor James Doyle,” says Peter Theron. “Everyone uses the interstate highway system, but the train will only be used by an elite few.”

The current rail line costs Wisconsin taxpayers $6.5 million, a figure that does not include any federal subsidies that support the train’s operation.

Theron has already proposed that funding of commuter and high-speed rail should only be provided as loans, rather than grants, to eliminate the illusion that “federal money is somehow free”.

Theron attempted to demonstrate the effects of passenger rail on Madison traffic with CIRCUS (Citizen-Initiated Rail-Corridor Use Study), but was denied a permit by Madison’s Street Use Staff Committee.

“This fall when voters elect a Republican governor, it will be a referendum to stop the train.” Theron adds. “I want voters to know that when they vote for a Republican for governor in November, that I will work with that Republican to make it easier to stop this poorly conceived project.”

Voters can learn more about Peter Theron by visiting theronforcongress.com or by emailing him at peter@theronforcongress.com.

2010 August 4 Theron response to CIRCUS permit denial

Peter Theron, candidate for Wisconsin’s Second Congressional District, reacted today to the denial of his application for a Citizen-Initiated Rail-Corridor Use Study, CIRCUS.

Theron said, “I am disappointed that the Madison Street Use Staff Commission denied my permit application for a simulation to study the effect of proposed rail schedules on Madison traffic. Before we proceed with any passenger rail project, we need a study of its traffic impact. To raise awareness of this issue, I intend to have an informational picket at the Blair-Williamson intersection on August 27 from 4 to 6 pm.”

2010 July 20 Theron named a True Reformer by NumbersUSA

Peter Theron, candidate for Wisconsin’s Second Congressional District, was named a True Reformer by NumbersUSA, a leading voice in the immigration debate. On the NumbersUSA report card for the Second District race, he is the only True Reformer. Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin has an F-; Chad Lee’s views are unknown.

Theron stated, “Legal immigrants are America’s most precious imports. They obey our laws and arrive here legally. They are already Americans in their hearts because they know the importance we place on the rule of law. In contrast those who enter the US by climbing a fence or swimming a river break our laws immediately. As long as they do not have respect for our law in their hearts, they cannot be Americans. They will remain illegal aliens.”

Theron said, “For legal immigrants, assimilation is a burden gladly borne. They know the importance of learning English and following our laws and customs. For the illegal alien, assimilation is easily avoided. Too many in Washington do not appreciate our culture and shared heritage. They cheer the "Press One for English" multiculturalism that tears at our common heritage. They support sanctuary cities.”

Theron concluded, “I am proud that NumbersUSA has named me a True Reformer. I call on the federal government to finish the border fence. I call on all levels of government to fully enforce our immigration laws. To the legal immigrant: Welcome. To the illegal alien: Leave.”

2010 June 22 Theron takes on the train

Peter Theron, candidate for Wisconsin’s Second Congressional District, proposed today a change in transportation funding to make it easier to kill wasteful transportation projects, while ensuring that truly vital work continues.

Theron stated, “Now is not the time for a project as ill-conceived as the Madison to Milwaukee highway-speed train. It will waste taxpayer dollars and needlessly bisect communities. It will disrupt the lives of many for the benefit of few.”

Theron said, “Currently if local government cancels a federally funded project, all federal money spent on the project to that point must be repaid. This discourages local officials from shutting down unnecessary projects. In times of plenty we could afford such waste. However, with our massive federal debt, we must encourage local governments to continue only vital projects.”

Theron concluded, “That is why I am proposing that Congress drop the continuing-effort string. Canceling a project would then require no payback. Further to ensure that only vital projects are continued, I propose that federal transportation funding be converted from grants to loans. These loans would have to be paid back over the life of the project. This would end the illusion that federal money is somehow free.”

2010 June 18 Theron criticizes Baldwin’s continued support of ObamaCare

Peter Theron, candidate for Wisconsin’s Second Congressional District, criticized Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin's (D-WI) continued support of ObamaCare. On June 15 when House Republicans offered a motion to repeal the ObamaCare individual mandate, Baldwin voted against repeal. On June 16 Congressman Steve King (R-IA) filed a Motion to Discharge a “bill (H.R. 4972) to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.” Baldwin has not signed this Discharge Petition.

Theron said, "Since Baldwin voted to enact ObamaCare, we have learned that many of the claims made about it by its advocates are false. Rather than lower premiums, ObamaCare will raise them. Rather than decrease the deficit, ObamaCare will increase it. Rather than allowing us to keep our insurance, ObamaCare will force as many as two out of every three Americans to change insurance plans."

Theron continued, "We are already running ruinous deficits. The Obama administration's admission that ObamaCare will not 'bend the cost curve down', but will instead add more debt, makes ObamaCare even more fiscally irresponsible. For the sake of our grandchildren, we must repeal ObamaCare and reform Medicare."

Theron concluded, "Despite the growing cap between the grand ObamaCare promises and the dismal ObamaCare reality, Baldwin has not reconsidered her ObamaCare support. Even as Britain and Canada work to add more private enterprise into their national health systems, Baldwin remains committed to forcible inserting government bureaucrats between us and our doctors. She wants Washington desk jockeys telling our doctors what care may be given and when care must be withheld. What ever happened to 'Keep your laws off my body'?"

2010 May 25 Baldwin's Ovation of Shame

Peter Theron, candidate for Wisconsin’s Second Congressional District, reacted to the disgraceful Democrat ovation during the Thursday May 20th address to a joint session of Congress by Felipe Calderón, the president of Mexico. After he tongue-lashed Arizona for daring to defend itself against invasion by Mexican illegal aliens, Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and the rest of the Democrats gave Calderón a standing ovation. In National Review Online, Andrew McCarthy described the scene thusly, “Make no mistake: In the Congress of the United States on Thursday, it was a hostile Mexico against a besieged Arizona. Mexico won in a rout.”

Theron said, “As anyone who has read the law knows, Arizona did not make illegal, illegal. All they did was make illegal, enforceable.”

Theron continued, “This ovation coming after the shameful passage of ObamaCare demonstrates that the liberals in Washington are willing to rule against the wishes of Americans and against the interests of America. For America’s future we must elect leaders who love America as a constitutional republic and as a beacon of liberty.”

In 1933 the Oxford Union debated and passed the infamous “King and Country” motion that “This House would not in any circumstances fight for King and Country”. Theron concluded, “This ovation of shame, when the Democrats took the side of a hostile foreign power is the Democrats’ ‘King and Country’ moment. They have weakened America and encouraged aggression against us. If their fecklessness is left uncorrected, we will rue this ovation.”

2010 May 20 Tax increases will not permanently fix Social Security

Peter Theron, candidate for Wisconsin's Second Congressional District, reacted to the tax-increase trial balloon contained in a report of the Senate Special Committee on Aging. The report claims that the tax increases will make Social Security solvent.

Theron stated, “Since 1929 no level of federal taxation has ever produced revenue more than 20% of GDP. That means that hiking Social Security taxes either by increasing the tax rate or increasing the wage limit will not increase government revenues. All that will happen is that more of the government revenue will be put in the Social Security pot and less will be put in the general fund to pay for things like the federal courts or the Border Patrol.”

Theron continued, “The claim that Social Security taxes are kept in a trust fund for the taxpayer's retirement means that increasing taxes also increases Social Security's liabilities. Social Security is a Ponzi scheme. It uses the money taken from current workers to pay its promises to former workers. It will always need more revenue. The tax increases in 1983 were supposed to keep the system solvent for 75 years. But once again we are told that more revenue is needed. Why? By focusing on a limited time horizon, the experts can claim that increased revenue will solve the problem. All that happened in 1983 and is being proposed now is kicking the problem down the road.”

Theron concluded, “To save Social Security and Medicare we must reform them along the lines presented in Paul Ryan's Roadmap for America's Future. This common-sense reform of Medicare and Social Security grandfathers in those who are retired or near retirement. Those who are younger and have more time to adjust will be given sustainable options that, coupled with their own savings, will allow them to pay for health insurance and retirement.”

2010 May 18 To the legal immigrant: Welcome. To the illegal alien: Leave.

Peter Theron, candidate for Wisconsin's Second Congressional District, stands with the people of Arizona as they grapple with the problems caused by illegal aliens. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer said, “This emergency has been the result of decades of neglect and an ongoing unwillingness by the federal government to fully shoulder its constitutional duty to secure our country’s Southern border with Mexico.”

Theron stated, “Legal immigrants are America’s most precious imports. They have shown respect for our laws by following them even before they came to our shores. They are already Americans in their hearts because they know the importance we place on following the law. In contrast those who enter the US by climbing a fence or swimming a river break our laws immediately. As long as they do not have respect for our law in their hearts, they cannot be Americans. They will remain illegal aliens.”

Theron continued, “We must have secure borders and immigration enforcement. Secure borders start with a border fence. Immigration enforcement means employers who knowingly hire illegal workers face significant fines. It means that law enforcement officers check the immigration status of anyone they arrest. It means that those who overstay visas are deported. It means that localities may not deem themselves ‘sanctuary’ cities and refuse to enforce the law.”

Theron concluded, “I stand with Arizona and call on the federal government to finish the fence. I call on all levels of government to fully enforce our immigration laws. To the legal immigrant: Welcome. To the illegal alien: Leave.”

2010 May 14 Theron supports the European Bailout Protection Act

Peter Theron, candidate for Wisconsin's Second Congressional District, supports the European Bailout Protection Act introduced in the House by Congressman Mike Pence (R-IN). As described by Mike Pence, “This legislation would require that countries like Greece cut spending and put their own fiscal house in order, instead of looking to the United States for a bailout.”

“At a time when the US government is running record deficits and incurring massive debts, we should not be borrowing still more money just to ship it overseas to bail out a spendthrift foreign government.” Theron stated.

“As we saw with TARP and the auto bailouts, giving money to economic failures does not make them successes.” Theron continued.

“All that bailouts do is defer the day of reckoning. Unfortunately the cost grows exponentially. So, the longer the solution is postponed, the larger the bill will be.” Theron concluded.

He has taught at UW-Madison, UW-Whitewater, and Beloit College. In the private sector he has created commercial software and delivered continuing education to professional computer programmers. In 2008 he was the Republican candidate in Wisconsin's Second Congressional District.

“The federal government is spending money we do not have, incurring debts we cannot repay, and making promises we cannot keep. For too long the liberal mantra has been tax and spend. Since moving to Madison in 1980, I have dealt with liberals in the classroom, on campus committees, and in my community. This background gives me the backbone to confront Washington's overspending and overreaching. I am the best choice to represent Wisconsin's Second District.” Peter Theron.

2010 April 29 Theron pledges to repeal and replace ObamaCare.

Peter Theron reacted to the recent Obama administration admission that ObamaCare will not "bend the cost curve down", but will in fact increase health-care costs. Theron stated, "Throughout the health-care debate, liberal claims that it would take less money to cover more people were obvious fantasy. It is good to see the Obama administration acknowledging this reality."

"This official validation of cost objections to ObamaCare confirms the wisdom and foresight of my signing the Club for Growth Repeal It pledge. In signing I pledged 'to sponsor and support legislation to repeal any federal health care takeover passed in 2010, and replace it with real reforms that lower health care costs without growing government.' My pledge has been accepted by Club for Growth and appears on their "Repeal It" website." Theron continued.

"One real reform to our current system of employer-provided health insurance is the high-deductible nationwide major-medical policy coupled with a health-savings account. A high deductible translates into lower premiums. Nationwide availability allows consumers to move to another state and take their health insurance with them. With the associated health-savings account consumers save to pay for both minor medical needs and the deductible should a major medical need arise." Theron said.

"Expanding the availability and portability of health-saving accounts would give consumers more health-insurance options and give our economy more flexibility in providing health insurance. With a health-savings account, consumers will be able to pay directly for more of their health care. When consumers pay directly for any service, the cost and quality of the service improves and the consumer is more satisfied." Theron concluded.
